Nairobi, Kenya Hundreds of Kenyans have taken to the streets to demonstrate against the killing of women, which has hit headlines since the beginning of 2024.

Kenyans, men and women, in various parts of the country, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kisumu are protesting the rising cases of women being killed in the county.

Chanting and holding placards against femicide, hundreds have protested the gruesome murder of women in the nation.

January started on a sad note in Kenya with the killing of women in Nairobi by men.  It started with the murder of Starlet Wahu whose body was found in a short-stay apartment in the city.

The suspect, John Matara, was tracked by the police, arrested, and is currently in custody as the authorities continue with investigations.

After Wahu’s death hit the headlines, several women came out to expose Matara, stating that he had harassed them but the police had not taken action against him.

Rita Waeni was a 20-year-old university student murdered and dismembered. Her body was found in a Roysambu short-stay house with no head. Her head was later found in a dam in Kiambaa, Kiambu.

Speaking on how Waeni was murdered, Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor said he had never seen anything like that before. He revealed that Waeni was strangled to death before her body was dismembered.

Two Nigerian men were arrested in connection to Waeni’s murder and had attempted to leave the country.  They had demanded Ksh 500,000 ransom from the victim’s parents who could not raise it.

When detectives inspected the house where the suspects were arrested in Ndenderu, they found a butcher knife and a hatchet. They also seized six mobile phones, three laptops, SIM cards, and a Kenyan identity card.

In a different case, a man in Kiambu attacked his ex-wife and her boyfriend in  Kiambu, leaving them with injuries.

The murder of women in the country has led to an outcry among the public and today, demonstrations were held in different parts of the country against the cruelty being perpetrated on women.
