Airtel subscribers can now upgrade to 0100, 0101 and 0102
phone number prefix after the telco received a-go-ahead from the Communication
Authority of Kenya to use the new prefixes.
The move comes after the company exhausted its use of 0730-0739,
0750-0756, and 0785-0789 prefixes in April this year citing an increase in the
number of subscribers.
The company has made it accessible to all subscribers who
wish to upgrade to the new number series, by placing them at all Airtel shops
across the country.
“You can get your prepaid and postpaid number upgraded to
new number series at your nearest Airtel Shop or customer care.” read a twit
from Airtel Kenya.
CAK statistics report of the telecommunication sector shows
that Airtel’s market share improved a great deal from 11% in the last quarter
to 23.4%.
The number of subscribers has also increased to about 11.56
a million subscribers, and the company expects more in the near future.
Airtel Kenya is the second-largest telecommunications
services provider in Kenya after Safaricom PLC and has an estimated 19.7%
market share in the telecommunication sector.
Airtel Kenya previously operated as Kencell, Celtel, and
Zain before rebranding to Airtel in November 2010.
