New guidelines by UEFA could see Premier League clubs plan
for play-offs, in a bid to qualify for next season’s Champions League and
Europa League.
The Sun Sports reports that fresh guidelines handed out on
Thursday asserts that “sporting merit” must be used to determine
which teams make Europe if the 2019/20 campaign cannot be completed.
PL organizers and UEFA have a raft of ideas to pick from,
ranging from a unique play-off system or a points-per-game tally.
“It would be preferable that suspended domestic
competitions would restart with a different format in a manner which would
still facilitate clubs to qualify on sporting merit,” said UEFA in a
statement.
The guidelines further stipulate that the procedure for
selecting clubs should be based on objective, transparent and
non-discriminatory principles.
The PL suspended its remaining fixtures for the 2019/20
season late March, following the coronavirus outbreak in the UK.
Several clubs’ players and manager contracted the virus and
have since recovered.
