The High Court has ordered rape case
retrial of rugby players Alex Olaba and Frank Wanyama.
The duo was sentenced to 15 years’
imprisonment for raping a woman in 2018.
The Court has also ordered Olaba and Wamalwa to be
moved to Kilimani Police Station to prepare to take plea before Tuesday July 11,
2020.
The former Kenyan international
rugby players were found guilty of gang rape charges following the verdict
delivered by Magistrate Martha Mutuku in August 2019.
The verdict stated that the victim,
a local musician, was traumatized by the turn of event at Seefa apartments in
Highrise, Nairobi on February 11, 2018.
“The complainant was traumatized
hence a deterrent sentence is necessary,” ruled Magistrate Mutuku.
In her statement, the victim claimed
that Olaba and Wanyama took advantage of her inebriated state and raped her
repeatedly.
However, in their statements, the
players maintained that the sexual contact was consensual.
