Athletics Kenya joins other government institutions and the
public at large in mourning the second President of the Republic Daniel
Toroitich Arap Moi.
In a twit on Wednesday AK said the LOTTO National Cross
Country Championships, which was scheduled to take place on Saturday at Uhuru
Gardens Nairobi, has been postponed to a later date.
The Riadha management cited the former president as a lover
of sports, whose love for athletics was immense.
“AK has postponed the AK/LOTTO National Cross Country
Championships that was scheduled for 8/2/2020 at Uhuru Gardens, Nairobi to
15/2/ 2020 (venue to be communicated). This is to allow us join fellow Kenyans
in mourning the former President, whose love for sports was immeasurable…” read
the twit in part.

AK further urged all athletes to continue training hard for
this important event, in which they intended to select a strong squad for the
Africa Cross Country Championships set for April 8 in Lome, Togo.
“We apologise to the athletes and their respective team
managements for the inconveniences,” AK said in statement.
Former President Daniel Moi passed on on Tuesday morning at
the Nairobi Hospital.
The Kenyan Cross Country Championships is an annual cross country
running competition that serves as the national championship for Kenya,
organised by Athletics Kenya.
The event is held in February in Nairobi, with entrants from
Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Police, Prisons or Universities and general public.
The event also doubles as the national trials for
international competitions, such as the IAAF World Cross Country Championships
and African Cross Country Championships.
The Championship feature four races matching international
programmes, which includes a senior men’s race (12 km), a senior women’s race
(8 km), a junior men’s race (8 km) and a junior women’s race (6 km).
