Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has once again reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to improving household food security and livelihoods across Machakos County under the campaign clarion call, “Chakula Mezani, Pesa Mfukoni.”

Speaking in a recent message to residents, the governor said her resolve is unchanged; “My commitment to the people of Machakos remains unshaken. I will keep working within the rule of law to ensure every household enjoys the true fruits of devolution.”

Since taking office the county government has packaged the slogan into an actionable three-pillar strategy emphasising food security, socio-economic empowerment and infrastructure, priorities that the Governor says will turn Machakos into a leading agricultural and commercial hub.

Over the last two years, the county has publicly reported multiple initiatives linked to the clarion call. These include distribution of agricultural inputs across the 40 wards, mechanised ploughing programmes, water-supply projects to support irrigation and membership exhibitions to showcase county products and market opportunities. The county has highlighted poultry and small-scale livestock kits, water tanks and mechanised ploughing as part of efforts to raise productivity and household incomes.

Wavinya framed these interventions as a fulfilment of devolution’s promise using county revenues and partnerships to create jobs and boost incomes while keeping decision-making closer to residents.

The Governor however, called out her critics for their manipulation efforts, stating that she remains unshaken to fulfill her responsiblities as the Machakos Governor.

“I have a responsibility as the Governor of Machakos County na kama nikufanya vitu vibaya, afadhali nirudi kwangu…because I don’t want to do things outside the law,” she stated.

Wavinya Ndeti’s tenure in Machakos County however, has been marked by escalating tensions and scrutiny. In mid-2025, health workers issued a 21-day strike notice over delayed promotions and inadequate staffing and supplies, prompting the governor to respond with promises of talks and structural reforms . As the crisis deepened, she directed the urgent recruitment of 500 nurses and suspended union deductions from payroll amid protests and breakdown of dialogue with union leaders .

The county also faced probing over approximately KSh 225 million held in undisclosed bank accounts, missing payment vouchers including one for KSh 25 million and dozens of accounts operating outside the County Revenue Fund, raising concerns over compliance with public finance regulations . Additionally, reports surfaced that anti-corruption investigators (DCI) raided Machakos County offices over suspected irregular procurement and misappropriation of funds, amplifying public concern over governance and accountability

Across these flashpoints, Wavinya has alternately defended her administration, asserting that she inherited a dysfunctional government and has since established policy frameworks, built new health facilities and mini-dams and taken steps toward reforms.
