Three days after the car containing bodies of Likon ferry
tragedy victims was retrieved from the Indian Ocean, President Uhuru Kenyatta
has revoked the appointment of the Kenya Ferry Service board members, as
published in the gazette notice dated October 16.
The sacked members are David Mwazo (Chairperson), Daula
Omar, Naima Amir, Phillip Ndolo and Rosina Nasigha Mruttu.
President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed David Mwazo in July this
year, as KFS board chair and two months down the line, Mwazo’s ouster is in the
public helm, following the Likon ferry tragedy that saw a mother and daughter
lose life.
What went wrong at the management of KFS is the fact that
someone is and was sleeping, following the accident, since it happened in
August to the point of finding bodies in October.
Dan Mwazo
Chairperson Mwazo was spotted at the seen and at every press
briefing, but his neck was not enough to servive the president’s axe.
Before landind the two-month term at KFS, Mwazo had failed
to secure a gubernatorial seat on Jubilee Party docket in 2017, after ditching
Raila Odinga’s ODM party.
In 2013, he was a member of the Coalition for Reforms and
Democracy (CORD), backing up ODM leader Raila Odinga for presidency.
Mr. Mwazo has served Voi as a Member of Parliament, and
served as a tourism minister in the grant-coalition government.
His political life detoriated when he left his Taita Taveta
County senatorial seat, competing with Governor Granton Sampoja in the
gubernatorial race.
The ferry tragedy comes at a critical time, two month after
Mwazo was appointed, following police investigations into the accident.
The other KFS board members are barely seven years in
office, from their appointment period to the time of incident.
Ms Omar and Ms Amir were appointed in June last year while
Ms Mruttu in November, 2015.
The number of those grilled by police is increasing, as many
anticipate further axe. So far, the coxswain of the ill-fated MV Harambee Amos
Bushuru, two private security guards, and two other top officials at KFS have
been questioned.
The tragedy befell Ms.Mariam Kighenda and daughter, Amanda
Mutheu, who died when their vehicle slid off the prow of mv Harambee midstream,
drowning into the ocean.
