The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC)
has dared Siaya Senator James Orengo to resign from his senatorial post, if he
despise the institution that oversaw his election to the Senate.
This comes even as Mr. Orengo termed the commission “a
criminal enterprise”, calling for its disbandment.
In a statement to the press, IEBC terms Senator Orengo’s
remarks as disrespectful and insulting to the constitution of Kenya.
“The remarks by Senator Orengo that the commission is a “criminal enterprise”
which can be disbanded at will is disrespectful and an insult to the
constitution… if indeed he stands for his sentiments, he should honourably
resign to gain moral grounds to criticize the institution that oversaw his
election to the Senate,” read the statement in part.
The commission also said that owing to the heated debate on
the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report calls to have a referendum and
boundaries delimitation activities which are part of its mandate, it calls on
enough time, like-minded individuals and institution for better service delivery
come 2022 general election.
“The law guarantees security of tenure and further provides
for legal procedure for removal of commissioners from office,” said the
commission.
The senator has been making several remarks over the
commission, calling for its disbandment even as BBI debate takes center stage.
