The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) portal is open for students to apply for placement to institutions of higher learning.
The online portal will be open until February 22, 2024. KCSE candidates of 2023 and other years (2000-2022) can log in to students.kuccps.net and apply for programmes they prefer.
According to the placement service, there are courses for all KCSE grades, A to E. Applicants can also visit Huduma Centres or Huduma Centre Cyber Cafes around the country for assistance in completing their applications.
Students who completed KCSE examinations will be placed to universities, Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions, Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), Teachers Training College (TTC), and Open University of Kenya (OUK), depending on their choice.
KCSE 2023 performance
201,133 students scored a mean grade of C+ and above in the 2023 KCSE examinations, qualifying them a direct entry into universities.
There are 39 public universities, 30 private universities, 237 public colleges in the Ministry of Education, 116 public colleges in other ministries, and 11 university TVETs in which a student can apply to be placed.
However, 48,174 students scored an E, and Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu was pained by that asking for an investigation into the reasons why the number was high.
Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang in late January also led a search for students who scored an E in the 2023 KCSE exams to have them join TVETs.
The unemployment crisis in Kenya
As the government pushes for students to join tertiary institutions for higher learning, unemployment in the country remains high with thousands of graduates joining the job market every year.
President William Ruto has recently been speaking on the availability of jobs for Kenyans in various countries like Saudi Arabia, Germany, and the United States.
His remarks were faulted by opposition leaders and a section of Kenyans saying the government should create jobs inside the country for its people instead of exporting labour.
Ruto has also insisted that the affordable housing project will help create jobs for young people in Kenya despite the legal battles the programme is facing in court.
