Public transport operator Super Metro Limited has confirmed that one of its buses was involved in the fatal accident in Juja on Monday, September 1, which triggered violent protests and the torching of a company vehicle.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Super Metro said the incident involved a bus with registration number KCZ 358N. According to the company, the crash occurred after a tuk-tuk attempted to change lanes, forcing a speeding motorbike rider who was overtaking at the time, to swerve in an attempt to avoid a collision.
“Unfortunately, the rider struck a pavement, fell and was fatally injured by the bus. The rider passed away at the scene,” the statement read in part.
The company said it was deeply saddened by the tragedy and extended condolences to the family of the deceased. It also pledged full cooperation with investigators from Juja Police Station, stressing its commitment to a “thorough and transparent inquiry.”
The accident sparked immediate outrage among boda boda riders, who later torched a Super Metro matatu along Thika Road, accusing the company of negligence. The confrontation paralyzed traffic as police rushed to contain the situation.
Super Metro, which has in recent years earned a reputation for orderliness and discipline on Nairobi roads, now faces heightened scrutiny after the incident.
“We remain committed to adhering to all regulatory requirements and supporting the ongoing investigation,” the company said.
Police have since launched investigations into both the accident and the destruction of the matatu, urging calm as they work to establish the circumstances of the fatal crash.
