Nairobi, Kenya – The government has increased the service charge fees for all eCitizen services.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) Njuguna Ndung’u said the new charges will be effective immediately.
The changes were highlighted in a gazette notice dated December 14, 2023.
“The charges will be applicable on all services unless otherwise waived by the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning. The charges take effect immediately,” the notice read in part.
What are the new eCitizen service charges?
According to the new changes, services below KSh 199 will attract a fee of KSh 5, and for services between KSh 200 – 299, Kenyans will pay a fee of KSh 10.
For services costing between KSh 300 – 499, a charge fee of KSh 15 will be applicable, between KSh 500 – 699 a fee of KSh 20, between KSh 700 – 999, a charge fee is Kes 25, and for services charging KSh 1,000 a fee of KSh 50 is applicable.
Revenue from eCitizen services
The government’s revenue collection on the eCitizen platform surpassed KSh 900 million per day as of December 2023.
Immigration and Citizen Services PS Julius Bitok said that the latest data revealed that KSh 903.6 million was collected on Wednesday 20th December 2023.
“Of the amount, nearly a third was generated from transactions in US dollars totalling $1,446,495 compared to the Ksh 680.4 million in the local currency,” said Bitok in a statement.
This has seen the government increase the service charge fee for US dollar transactions on eCitizen to $1 (Ksh 154, based on the current transaction charges.
Government single pay bill number
This comes after President Ruto directed all government agencies to have their services on the digital eCitizen platform by the end of 2023.
The president also directed that payments for all government services should be made through one pay bill number 222222 to ensure better management and transparency in revenue collection.
Over 14,000 government services are currently available and payable through eCitizen
During Jamhuri celebrations, Ruto said the collection of taxes had improved through the digitization program adopted by his government through the e-citizen program, adding that the technology has helped ‘reduce the leaking of funds and corruption’ in the government.
