Michael Warutere of Riara Springs Academy is the best pupil in the just announced 2023 KCPE results, leading with 428 marks out of 500 marks.
Speaking to the press, Warutere said, “I did not expect to be the best pupil in this year’s KCPE examinations. I expected to get maybe 410 marks but God is good and I have emerged the best with 428 marks.”
The learner added, “I would like to join Mang’u High School and later become a software engineer.”
While releasing the 2023 KCPE examination results, the Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu disclosed that “8,525 candidates scored between 400 and 500 marks.”
However, on the lower end, 2,060 candidates scored between 01 and 99 marks.
Machogu also reported that “only two candidates were involved in examination malpractices across the country.”
This comes even as four teachers in Kisii County were arrested for engaging in exam cheating during the KCSE examinations.
The 8.4.4 education system was not that bad
This year’s KCPE result marks the end of the 8.4.4 system in primary school as the education sector continues to implement the new CBC (competency-based curriculum) system in Kenyan schools. The CBC curriculum has been praised for encouraging the wholesome development of a child’s capabilities in school with an emphasis on extracurricular activities and practical aspects of education.
On the other hand, the 8.4.4 curriculum has been blamed for focusing on theory and students cramming content just to pass exams, which contributed to the adoption of the competency-based curriculum.
Nevertheless, the 8.4.4 system had its perks.
- For example, good marks got you into a performing high school and university. Yes, sometimes it does not matter where one studies for high school, but the truth is a good school gives a hardworking student better chances of passing their secondary education exams and joining a university to study a course of their choice.
- The system also instilled resilience and discipline in serious students. Studying six subjects in primary school and eight in high school called for commitment and focus among pupils and students to get good results in examinations. Such character can be transferred to other aspects of life for positive outcomes.
- Studying different subjects in the 8.4.4 system meant students had multiple choices, helping them make career choices from a wide range of options. Moreover, the system was great for students who wanted to enter the academic world. The hyper-focus, discipline, and commitment needed for good results under this curriculum are vital for students who want to advance in the academic world.
- The ranking of students in the 8.4.4 system is a source of motivation for many learners. Who wouldn’t want to be the best or among the best in a given area? We live in a world with different ranking systems and they are in various aspects of our lives. For example, having more followers on social media is a good thing, though it has downsides.
