Police in Kitengela have arrested 20 people in connection to an incident where a vehicle was damaged for running over a bodaboda rider in the location.
The Thursday incident saw boda boda riders in Kitengela gang up on a motorist who has been identified as Conex Kemunto Onengo for hitting one of their own.
In a video seen by News9 Kenya, the riders are seen attacking the driver of the car.
The police in Kajiado County have also impounded 26 motorcycles following the accident that also saw pedestrians run over by the same motorist.
The arrested individuals are to be charged with assault and malicious damage to property.
Events leading up to the assault
A statement from the police read in part,
“The driver, Conex Kemunto Onengo, sped off towards Namanga general direction through the Arusha service lane and hit pedestrian Bernard Mutinda, aged 32 years, injuring him on the left leg below the knee and his son Hashley Baraka aged 4 years who complains of chest pains.
It continued to add,
“She drove towards the Old Namanga Road and hit an unknown motorcycle, which the rider escaped, injuring the pillion passenger Damaris Wandia aged 28 years, who is expectant, on the left leg and bruises on both hands.”
Kemunto reportedly injured another pedestrian before encountering rowdy boda boda operators at Enkare who blockaded the road and surrounded her vehicle.
“She then hit a pedestrian, Joseph Mutiso Wambua, injuring him in the right leg and right shoulder. She then drove through Tarmac Road, exiting the Shell Petrol Station at Enkare, where the vehicle was blocked by rowdy Boda Boda riders.”
The co-driver Christopher Mutua was beaten and sustained injuries on the upper lip, two broken front upper teeth, and bruises on his forehead.
Kemunto’s vehicle was extensively destroyed with stones and was taken to the police station awaiting inspection.
