Kenyan journalist working for CNN Larry Madowo has lamented after Kenya Airways (KQ) charged him around Ksh 200,000 for a one-hour flight.
The renowned journalist was flying using Kenya Airways from Nairobi to Entebbe and was charged US $1,268.
In a social media post, a distraught Madowo commented,
“Hard to believe but Kenya Airways charged me $1,268 for a Nairobi-Entebbe return ticket in cattle class.”
He added,
“There’s no reason why a 1-hour flight should cost Sh200,000 even if it was last minute like mine! Je, huu ni ungwana?”
KQ in the headlines
KQ has been in the headlines recently with the management releasing a statement saying there might be disruptions in flight schedules this festive season following challenges in the aircraft spare parts global supply chain.
Additionally, a Dubai-bound KQ aircraft was forced to revert to JKIA after tyre debris was found on the ruway. It reverted back from Wajir.
The National Treasury also paid an additional Ksh 2.7 billion this year as part of KQ’s debt after inheriting the debt from the national carrier, which has been making losses despite flights around the globe.
Many international flights go through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), which has had its share of bad publicity in the media.
The airport has been affected by the nationwide blackouts experienced in the country and the generators failed to kick in. Madowo was at the airport during a power outage at the airport.
In the recent countrywide power outage that affected the airport as well, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen argued that there might be a case of sabotage at the airport, adding that he would involve the police to investigate the generator failure at the airport during power outages.
