Kenya has been elected as chair of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS Coordinating Board for the year 2024.

The decision was made at the 53rd UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board convening held in Geneva, Switzerland, according to a post on  X, formerly Twitter, by the Cabinet Secretary for Health Susan Nakhumicha.

Nakhumicha said,

“The decision puts Kenya on the driver’s seat on important decision making on both local and international levels due to our capacity to respond to HIV/AIDS.”

The world marked World AIDS Day on December 1 with the theme focusing on the critical role that testing plays in controlling and eventually ending the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

She added,

“Social and structural barriers continue to increase the vulnerability of HIV infections amongst the population, particularly affecting adolescent girls and young women. We must, therefore, put deliberate prevention efforts by improving our understanding of factors that are a cause and driver of AIDS in our communities for us to achieve the collective goal to end AIDS by 2030,”

The cabinet secretary went on to state,

“We will intensify prevention efforts, expand access to treatment, activate awareness and sensitization campaigns, as well as champion inclusively as we focus on building a future where HIV/AIDS is not a threat to communities.”

Dr. Ruth Laibon represented Kenya’s ministry of health at the programme coordinating board. She expressed Kenya’s commitment to the global response to HIV.
