Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi
Sonko has directed the suspension of all arrests by the City Inspectorate and
Enforcement Officers, until further notice.
This is in line with President Uhuru
Kenyatta’s Sunday directives to prevent exposure and spread of the novel
coronavirus (COVID-19), which has been declared a pandemic by the World Health
Organization (WHO).
In a notice statement executed at his
Upper Hill private office on Tuesday, Sonko said that the move is as a result
of the suspension of court’s operation by the Chief Justice David Maraga.
“This is informed by the fact that
the operations of all courts of law have been suspended, hence suspects cannot
be arraigned within 24 hours, as provided for in the constitution,” read the
statement in part.
The Governor adds that, the arrests
could also violet WHO and the ministry of health guidelines on social
distancing to avoid the spread of COVID-19, since suspects are usually crowded
the county police vehicles.
However, the County boss urged the
department to remain vigilant in ensuring that all county laws and enforcement
are adhered to.
