Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago is set to be charged following the Finland scholarship scandal.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) CEO Twalib Mbarak has said they got the go-ahead from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to charge Mandago over the Finland scholarship scam.

“We are dealing with many cases, including the Finland case, and for the senator, we have recommended that he be charged,” Mbarak said.

The EACC chief was speaking in Murang’a County during a public engagement forum and further expounded that the EACC had acquired evidence it would use against Mandago.

Mandago will be charged along with 10 other people for their involvement in defrauding students from Uasin Gishu County.

Other county officials accused with him are Joseph Kipkemoi Maritim, Meshak Rono, and Joshua Kipkemoi Lelei.

Mandago’s troubles

Mandago and his co-accused are accused of plotting to steal Ksh 1.1 billion from a Kenya Commercial Bank account in Eldoret opened under the Uasin Gishu Education Trust Fund.

The money in the account was sourced from parents of students in the county and was meant for paying their university fees abroad in Finland and Canada under the Uasin Gishu County Overseas Education Program.

Mandago was arrested in August and released with a case to answer after demonstrations in Uasin Gishu County involving parents and students claiming the former Uasin Gishu governor defrauded them.

The Uasin Gishu County Overseas Education Program was established under Mandago’s leadership when he was the governor of the county.
