The National Police Service (NPS) has announced temporary road closures and traffic diversions across Nairobi on Friday, August 22, 2025.

The move comes in a bid to facilitate the smooth flow of vehicles and ensure security during the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) matches.

In a statement, NPS said the changes will mostly affect the Thika Superhighway and connecting roads leading to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, the main venue for the tournament.

The advisory comes as thousands of fans are expected to attend the games, raising concerns about congestion and safety.

Motorists have been urged to follow alternative routes during the period of disruption:

  • From CBD to Thika Road: Drivers heading to Ruiru, Juja and Thika should use Kiambu Road at Exit 4. A roadblock will be in place at Muthaiga.
  • To Mwiki: Vehicles using Thika Superhighway to Mwiki should take the Ruaka–Baba Ndogo–Lucky Summer–Nairobi River–Mwiki route.
  • From Thika, Juja and Ruiru to CBD: Motorists should use either the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road, with a roadblock set at Ruiru Interchange.
  • From Githurai to CBD: Drivers should divert via Githurai 44–Kiambu Road.
  • To Kasarani Stadium (without access passes): Fans coming from CBD are advised to use the service lanes at Exit 7 and Exit 8.

NPS further stated that it is working in collaboration with other government agencies to minimize disruptions and enhance safety.

Additional police officers have been deployed along major routes, with the service warning that stern action will be taken against anyone violating traffic rules.

The advisory underscores the significance of the CHAN 2024 tournament, which has put Nairobi in the continental spotlight. While the diversions may inconvenience motorists, police stressed that they are temporary and necessary to manage the surge in traffic.

For city residents, today marks both a logistical challenge and a moment of pride as Nairobi hosts Africa’s football spectacle
