Here in Kenya, People work hard as opposed to working smart for
success. Many think that going to bed late and waking up early in the morning
will definitely earn bountiful living –and it has indeed worked for many out of
faith.

Despite scientists and researchers recommendation to take
enough rest through sleep, which refresh your brain after a long day of
tiredness, many people have restructured their brains to run 24/7, and this
could be a recipe to neurodegenerative diseases.

In a video aired by WIRED, a sleep scientist at UCSF Aric
Prather explains that “Sleep is so critical for so many parts of our body and
our mind”.

Prather continue to say that sleep, strengthens the immune
system and helps regulate metabolism, by clearing out toxins that build up in
the brain and prevent neurodegenerative diseases.

“Sleep is like the dishwasher of the brain,” says Prather in
the wired video.

He adds that all phases, from the lightest slumber to the
deepest unconsciousness, are important processes that allow our brains and
bodies to recover from the previous day and can help us learn and remember
information better.

Sleeping from 8 pm to 6 am could sound oversleep to many,
but WIRED explain that Measuring disturbed sleep could be one way to detect the
onset of neurodegenerative diseases, and medicines that help promote more natural sleep
cycles could help treat those very diseases.

They add that abnormal sleep plays a role in diseases like
Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

According Prather, the future of sleep medicine is big and
can be thought of as a necessity.

“I’m excited about the future of sleep medicine, Instead of
thinking of sleep as a nuisance, maybe we’ll start finally seeing it for what
it actually is: a necessity.”
