Office gossip has its benefits

Efficient communication is an essential aspect in every
organization. It ensures that all stakeholders have the information they need
to foster proper coordination, harmony, growth, and development.

There are different patterns of communication in every
establishment downward, upward, horizontal, and grapevine. We are going to look
at grapevine for today to understand its benefits in a business, non-profit
firm, or institution.

The common name for grapevine is gossip. It is part of what
makes an organization ‘healthy’. If you are working in a place where no one
talks about juicy office stories that is a red flag. It shows that employees
are so afraid to gossip that they rather keep quiet instead of getting in
trouble with the bosses or other people in charge.

Such a culture is ‘unhealthy’. People working under fear are
likely to be stressed, discontented with the workplace, uncomfortable, and they
are only there to earn a living. If another promising opportunity comes a long,
they will be happy and willing to leave without question

Rumors are part of gossip. There is always some truth in
rumors, for example, about layoffs, the boss’ favourite, salary increment, a new
boss, and financial deals. They can cause excitement and tension among employees
but that is temporary.

It is crucial that the leadership of an organization addresses
the negative rumors before they get out of hand and become a completely different
story. Word of mouth has power. Someone will leave the office and tell another person
about what is happening in your company or call other people causing wrong or
unpleasant information to spread like a wild fire. Positive grapevine does not
cause harm.

As the management, you can use grapevine to your advantage.
How? It assists you in testing the waters in your establishment. You are in a
position to know the expectations of workers and how they would react to ideas.
Through gossip, you can gauge the temperament around your business. You will
hear people talking about different things and from them you can get ideas on how
to handle issues.

Office gossip has both positive and negative effects. Take advantage
its strengths and use it in a beneficial manner. There is nothing wrong with
grapevine as long as you take measures to control it especially negative information
circulating around about your company.

However, office gossip among employees about their fellow colleagues is difficult to control. People have different personalities; some are mean while others are kind. It would be helpful for employees to know ways of handling gossip when it is about them to prevent it from causing stress and affecting their productivity.
