A cyclone has killed over 20people in southeastern Zimbabwe
sweeping homes and bridges. The tropical storm caused flooding and destruction
in Mozambique and Malawi before hitting Zimbabwe on Friday leaving the affected
areas without power and cutting off communication.
Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Information through Twitter has said,
“Number of deaths is confirmed at 24 mainly from Chimanimani east. The number of
missing people is currently 40 and the fatalities include 2 students.”
The ministry added that Chimanimani, which borders Mozambique
has been affected the most with the cyclone causing floods and destroying crops.
The country’s meteorological department predicts the storm
to continue throughout the weekend. Airforce helicopters are helping with rescue
operations but the strong winds were slowing flights.
