A documentary film based on musician-turned-politician Bobi Wine has been nominated for an Oscar Award in 2024.
The documentary, Bobi Wine: The People’s President, highlights Wine’s fights for democracy in Uganda. It is based on his daring political journey that saw him shift directly from music to running for parliament in 2017 and thereafter for the presidential seat in Uganda in 2021 against the long-serving President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Museveni has been in office for decades, running for presidency multiple times and winning in the East African country. His administration is tough on personalities that come up to oppose him in presidential elections like Wine and Kizza Besigye.
Wine’s home has been surrounded before by police officers for his political stands. He has also been detained by Museveni’s government. Beisgye has had his share of cruel treatment from Museveni’s government that one time saw him pepper-sprayed for opposing the ruler.
Wine lost a disputed election in 2021 for Uganda’s presidency and the authorities wanted to stop a planned march in his support when he returned home. His supporters were arrested, and journalists were pepper-sprayed and beaten by security forces.
The documentary on Wine is one of five Oscar nominees for Best Documentary announced on Tuesday. The others are: “Four Daughters”, “20 Days in Mariupol”, “The Eternal Memory”, and “To Kill a Tiger.”
