For the past three days, Safaricom users have had issues with Mpesa and Safaricom messages appearing on spam folders.
According to the statement by Safaricom on Friday, February 9, the issue is affecting Android users, who have an alternative app for receiving messages.
“We have noted that some of our customers are not receiving messages from safaricom and Mpesa. This issue is affecting customers with Android phones, who are using third party sms apps.” States Safaricom.
In resolving the issue, Safaricom in its statement provided the guidelines for their affected users, instead of flocking the shops across the country. The steps to resolve the issue are;
- Open the SMS app and check spam and blocked folders.
- Find a Safaricom and Mpesa message and unblock it.
- All subsequent messages will thereafter appear in the main inbox.
Additionally, customers using Android smartphones can select the default SMS app, as it does not have a spam folder.
Kenyans ask why M-Pesa messages are missing
Expressing their concerns and frustrations on X, some Kenyans have already resolved the issue while others still having issues with M-Pesa delays.

“I have done all the above, but still, I receive my M-Pesa transaction messages after 15 to 30 minutes, sometimes even up to 1 hour.”

“Am wondering who was that mogul trying to tamper with our M-Pesa. Mimi I rebooted my phone more than five times.”
@printcave asked:
“What’s the Technical reason as to why messages are being flagged as spam, what’s really going on behind the scenes?”
The network company in recent days has had issues, with M-Pesa transactions delays in checking M-Pesa balances and the recent spam messages in one month.
M-Pesa users will not send money to unregistered lines
This followed Safaricom’s announcement that registered M-Pesa users will no longer be able to send money to unregistered mobile money customers starting February 5.
In a statement to its customers, the telecommunication company said registered users will “however be able to send and receive money across different mobile money providers like Airtel and T-Kash.
The announcement was a surprise to many MPESA users, considering that in 2022 the Communication Authority of Kenya had directed that unregistered phone numbers would be switched off.
