A 61 year old US woman gave birth to her own granddaughter a week ago having carried the baby for her son and his husband.

According to CNN, Matthew Eledge and Elliot Dougherty welcomed their daughter and named her Uma Louise Dougherty-Eledge who was delivered by surrogate Cecile Eledge, Matthew’s mum.

The baby was born weighing 2.6 kilograms and was conceived via in vitro fertilization. Matthew donated the sperm and his husband’s sister Lea Yribe donated the egg.

When interviewed by CNN, Matthew Eledge said in gay marriage, people can still get children and build a family in a special way.

“When you are gay and married, you go into it with knowledge that you will create a family in a special way. There are unique, creative ways of building a family,” he said.

In the United States, 2.2 % of men are identified as gays. Homosexuality is still a controversial issue but polls and surveys show an obvious trend towards accepting and tolerating homosexuals in the state.
