Police have confirmed 16 people dead and several injured as an explosion ripped through the Somali capital of Mogadishu on Thursday. First medical responders at the scene confirmed 11 people dead with at least 16 wounded and that the toll could rise.

The incident happened during lunch break and according to witnesses they could see people who were eating their lunch time meals wincing in pain on the floor.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility from The Al Shabaab terror that have been in Guerilla like attacks on the Capital.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Police Colonel Mohammed Hassan said that at least 17 people were wounded in the blast that happened outside a crowded restaurant in Mogadishu.

He told AP that most of the casualties were among the people who were dining at the restaurant when the incident happened.
